Pond Planting on Saturday, Sept 19 at 9AM
VOLUNTEERS ARE STILL NEEDED! Breakfast refreshments will be provided.
Come help us plant for clean water!
WHERE: Herberger's Pond, Stillwater (NE corner of Hwy 36 and Washington Ave)
WHEN: Saturday, September 19th at 9 AM (should be done by 11 AM)
Brown's Creek Watershed District (BCWD) is looking for some volunteers to help with a small planting in a stormwater pond in front of Herberger's store in Stillwater. The BCWD has worked with the City of Stillwater to improve the efficiency of the pond to improve water quality of Long Lake. In 2007, the pond was expanded and the outlet was modified. In addition, an experimental water filter was added to take out even more nutrients. Native emergent plants would be helpful in using up available nutrients in the pond and also act as a physical barrier for floating algae mats before getting into the filter. The BCWD is planning to work with the City of Stillwater to dewater the pond in order to plant an area within the pond and around the filter intake. We will only be planting in the dewatered areas. There will be approximately 650 plants in 4" pots.
WHAT DO YOU NEED: Gloves, a spade shovel or trowel (some will be provided), an hour or two of your time and a strong back. The pond will be dewatered, so no waders are needed...but be prepared for a bit of mud.
