Current Projects

1. Baseline Monitoring

2. Infiltration Monitoring very large file

  • Kern Center Pond (included in #2)
  • Bradshaw (included in #2)

3. Long Lake Management Plan

  • The Brown’s Creek Watershed District has completed a Long Lake Management Plan in May 2006.  The overall goal of the plan is to reduce total phosphorous loading to Long Lake (DNR ID#82-21) by 35% from subwatershed loading over the next ten years.
  • 3b North Marketplace Water Quality Improvements Feasibility and Preliminary Design
    • Among other elements, the Long Lake Management Plan included recommendations for improvements to existing storm water ponds in the watershed. Three specific ponds located in the North Marketplace area were chosen by the BCWD for further feasibility study due to their potential for water quality improvement: MP-9 (Highlands), MP-8 (Cottages) and MP-1 (Wildwood Pines).
    • Based on the North Marketplace Water Quality Improvements Feasibility Study and Preliminary Design, completed in November 2006, the BCWD determined to move forward with improvements to MP-8 (Cottages) and MP-1 (Wildwood Pines). Improvements to MP-8 are estimated to result in an annual phosphorous export reduction of 4.7 pounds. Improvements to MP-1 are estimated to result in an annual phosphorous export reduction of 5.5 pounds.
  • 3c. Highway 36 North and South Subwatershed Water Quality Improvements
  • 3d. Tower Drive Pond Water quality Improvements (included in 3c)
  • 3e. Washington Ave. Pond Water Quality Improvements (included in 3c)

4. Lake McKusick Management Plan

  • The City of Stillwater, Middle St. Croix Watershed Management Organization and Brown's Creek Watershed District are working together to develop a management plan for McKusick Lake. The City of Stillwater is taking the lead and has contracted with Wenck and Associates to begin the McKusick, Lily, and Long Lake Management Plan. This plan will integrate the existing Long Lake Management Plan developed by Brown's Creek Watershed District. The BCWD is planning to contribute $25,000 towards the development of the management plan for McKusick Lake and the subwatersheds between Long Lake and McKusick Lake. A first draft of the plan is proposed for Fall 2007. Technical and Citizen Advisory Committees will be invited to review the draft prior to adoption.

5. Brown's Creek Biota TMDL

  • Brown’s Creek is a designated trout stream located in the heart of Washington County. The headwaters of Brown’s Creek are listed as biologically impaired for both fish and macroinvertebrates while the lower portion still maintains a viable trout population. Brown's Creek Watershed District, Washington Conservation District and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency are working together to develop the first phase of the Brown's Creek Biological TMDL Stressor Identification Study.

    • The Trout Habitat Preservation Project (THPP), the first Capitol Improvement Project of the newly formed Brown’s Creek Watershed District (BCWD), was a project designed to alleviate flooding surrounding a large land-locked basin while protecting the temperature sensitive resources of Brown’s Creek. This project was constructed in 2000.
